Krishna Kumari (Age-84) a veteran Telugu actress breathed her last on 24th January 2018 in at her Bengaluru residence. The contemporary of Savitri, Krishna Kumari was a well-known actress from 1960 to 1980. She ruled the Telugu film industry for two decades. She acted in some Tamil and Kannada movies also. Her forefathers hailed from Rajahmundry, Andhra Pradesh. She co-starred with great legends namely – N.T.Rama Rao, Akkineni Nageswara Rao, Krishnam Raju, Dr. Rajkumar, Sivaji Ganesan, Kanta Rao, and Jaggayya.

Some of Krishna Kumari’s classic movies were; Bharya Bhartalu (1961), Vagdanam (1961), Kulagothralu (1962), Gudi Gantalu(1964). She acted in 150 movies in Telugu, Tamil, Kannada and Hindi movies as well. Though she got many offers from Hindi, she always preferred to stay in South Indian film industry, yet she made her own indelible mark in Telugu, Tamil, Kannada and Hindi movies totaling 230 movies. The array of her movies stole the hearts of many movie-goers in those days. Despite having a stiff competition in Telugu movie industry, she won the president’s award.

Krishna Kumari’s movie voyage in Telugu film industry started in 1951 with the most-watched masterpiece ‘Paathala Bhairavi’ in a tiny role. Her filmy passion was soon recognized by movie directors in those days. She was handpicked for the movie ‘Navvithe Navaratnalu.’   Bharya Bhartalu (1961), Vagdanam (1961), Kulagothralu (1962), Gudi Gantalu(1964) just to name some, brought her a lot of fame.

Sankaramanchi Janaki, popularly known as “Sowcar Janaki”, was Krishna Kumari’s sister.

During her halcyon days in the movie industry, she stood as a heart-throb for many.  With her unique style of acting, she essayed several characters of the goddess, queen, Sati Savithri. She made her entry into movie celluloid when she was 16-year old. She learned her Kuchipudi dance under the tutelage of the great legend Late. Sri. Vemapti China Satyam.

She reached the edge of death a couple times while she was doing her projects with ‘N.T.Rama Rao’; both times she was saved by the reel and real hero – Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao. A song was being shot near a seashore in the film ‘Lakshadhikari’. Then a huge tidal wave gulped her and she lost the contact with the movie crew. N.T.Rama Rao risking his life dived into the sea and saved her life. Incidentally, while co-starring with NTR in the movie ‘Bandipotu’, she was riding a horse in a bit of that movie, the horse she was on went unruly and unleashed itself. Krishna Kumari fell down and was dragged for half a kilometer. Again NTR fearlessly reached her and saved her. Krishna Kumari, many times mentioned these two incidences and poured her gratitude on NTR – how NTR saved her life twice.
