Lakshmi Devi Kanakala, wife of Devadas kanakala at the age of her 78 years passed away today i.e. on Saturday (3rd February 2018) at her residence in Manikonda. She was an actress herself and more popular as the mother-in-law of small screen TV anchor ‘Suma.’ Lakshmi Devi had been sick since long. Lakshmi Devi’s is not new to many people in the movie industry. She started her career when she was at her tender of age of 11. She acted in many Telugu drams. She made a mark on her own in theatrical arts, not to be tagged as ‘Wife’ of popular actor Devadas Knakala or mother of Rajeev Kanakala or mother-in-law of anchor ‘Suma’. She gained her popularity as a dancer, actress, and trainer.

Lakshmi Devi has good recognition in the film industry.  She was an actress and acted in several dramas and she appeared in a few Telugu movies as well.  She trained many artists along with her husband Devadas Kanakala. Madras Film Institute is ever indebted to her for having harnessed many budding actors at that time. Tollywood well-known actors Subhalekha Sudhakar and actress and Kamal Hasan’s niece – Suhasini are from Laksmi Devi’s training school, just to name a few.
She accomplished her popularity in films, her prominent characters in movies include Vijayashanthi’s mother-in-law role in ‘Police Lockup’, Rajendra Prasad’s mother role in ‘Kobbari Bondam’.
The popular actor of 1970s – Devadas Kanakala married Lakshmi Devi in the year 1971.  The couple was blessed with two children Rajeev Kanakala and Sri Laxmi. Rajeev kanakala’s wife is TV anchor ‘Suma’ and Lakshmi Devi’s son-in-law Peddi Ramarao is also a prominent drama actor.

MAA (Movie Artists Association) expressed its deep condolences for the demise of Laksmi Devi. A ‘house-full’ of artists home, is being inundated with South Indian filmy celebrities and drama artists to share the sorrow of Laksmi Devi’s demise.

Junior NTR, known as an intimate friend of Rajeev Kanakala was full of tears to see the deceased artist. The relationship between Suma and her mother-in-law forever stays as a milestone in the in the well-knitted families. While Suma was being interviewed by other anchors in some shows, every anchor made their shows more popular by surprisingly flashing the clipping of Lakshmi Devi and made her speak about ‘Suma.’ Lakshmi Devi always mentioned – how fortunate she was to have ‘Suma’ as her daughter-in-law. Despite her busy shooting schedules Suma also treated her just like a mother. The entire credit goes to Lakshmi Devi for weaving her family ties intact.

On the other hand, Mega-Star Chiranjeevi responding to the demise of Laksmi Devi mentioned, “I am proud of being a student of Smt. Lakshmi Devi.” While extending his condolences to Kanakala family he said, “As far as my career is concerned she was not just ‘Laksmi Devi’ (Goddess of wealth) to me, but she was ‘Saraswati Devi’ (Goddess of Education) to me. Kanakala Lakshmi Devi was the one who paved the foundation for my movie career. Smt. Laksmi Devi’s teachings had awakened the actor in me.

“The amount of pride I get from millions of people is equivalent to the pride of being a student of Smt. Kanakala Lakshmi Devi. Her demise brings a great distress to me and no other person on this earth can fulfill her place. She treated me like her son and helped me in harnessing my theatrical skills. I miss her a lot. I pray God that her soul rest in peace” Chiranjeevi lamented.
